Meet Joan L. Sefcik, DDS, F-IABDM

Joan Sefcik DDSDr. Joan L. Sefcik is a San Antonio native who attended St. Mary’s University and was accepted early to dental school at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. After her 1985 graduation, she practiced conventional dentistry for 9 years in Dallas, Arlington, and Galveston before relocating to Austin.

Two years later, she was introduced to biological dentistry and has never turned back. Her practice has been holistic and biological ever since.

Dr. Sefcik is a past president of the International Academy of Biological Dentistry and Medicine (IABDM) and a current IABDM Fellow. She also serves on their credentialing committee and oversees their mentoring program, providing guidance in biological dentistry to those new to its philosophy and approach.

She is also a member of the Holistic Dental Association, the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT), the International Association of Mercury Safe Dentistry, Dental Amalgam Mercury Solutions (DAMS), and the Weston Price Foundation.

When not practicing dentistry, Dr. Sefcik enjoys gardening, animals, yoga and meditation, studying, and taking courses on nutrition, herbs, supplements, and alternative healing modalities. She is also active in Fluoride Free Austin, which aims to stop the practice of fluoridation in our geographic area.

“I enjoy my work,” says Dr. Sefcik, “because I’m contributing to the overall health of the patient. It’s rewarding to see patients who have been suffering for a long time from various illnesses improve after the toxins and infections are removed from their mouths.”
